Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 (based on experience)
We are working in partnership with a SEND school for children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and Autism/ASC based in London Borough of Barnet. The school is looking for a SENCO to join their friendly and supportive permanent staff team. This is a full-time position starting immediately.
This is a growing and therapeutic school that caters to students aged 11-18 years of age, headed by a wonderfully inspiring Headteacher who supports and leads her dynamic and diverse staff team to enable them to be the best educators for the pupils who attend the school. The student's needs and wellbeing are at the heart of everything that the school does and they take pride in helping our students to re-engage with their learning and thrive and develop as individuals & as part of the community. They do this through individualised care, in small class sizes, alongside a team composed not just of educationalists, but a wide array of healthcare professionals who work together as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Role of the SENCO includes:
* Take a leading role in making sure that SEND/SEMH needs are appropriately identified, provided for and managed to make sure that every student has the right support & resources
* Monitor & evaluate the performance of students and teaching staff
* Lead the formation and delivery of improvement strategies where required
* Help to develop an inclusive curriculum and successfully help to prepare students, not only for examinations but also for life after education
* Develop and implement the SEND policy
* Coordinate and lead reviews including EHCP reviews
* Work closely with parents/carers, offering support and guidance
* Provide staff training on SND and inclusive teaching practices
SENCO Requirements:
* Must have successfully completed a course of teacher training and have experience as a qualified teacher - this is not suitable for ECTs
* Ideally have National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCO) but this SENCOs without the award but who are willing to undertake the SENCO qualification are encouraged to apply
* Have experience of working with young people with SEMH, Autism/ASC, anxiety, sensory processing difficulties, social communication needs
* Have experience working as a SENCO or in the management of multidisciplinary teams
* Able to build solid and meaningful working relationships and be a role model
* Passion for working with SEND
Some of the students have never been diagnosed or will not be diagnosed, but have mental health needs such as severe anxiety and find it difficult to be in mainstream school settings for different reasons. The school is determined to provide a positive, therapeutic, nurturing, and encouraging learning environment where children can develop their self-esteem and independence.
