Job Requirements / Description
Beamline Scientist / Senior Beamline Scientist - CSXID £38,756 to £42,588 or £46,676 to £54,912 per annum Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Oxfordshire Full time Reference: 11464 About Us Diamond Light Source is the UKs national synchrotron science facility. Located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, a 20-minute drive south of Oxford in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Diamond Light Source conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science and offers rewarding career opportunities. We are currently planning a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II which will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing. About the Role We now have an opportunity for a Beamline Scientist to join the Coherent Soft X-ray Imaging and Diffraction (CSXID) beamline, one of the flagship beamlines in the Diamond-II upgrade project. The CSXID beamline will provide polarised soft x-rays with high coherent flux and will support a range of coherent imaging techniques delivering high resolution imaging in both 2D and 3D. The beamline will include two end-stations with sample environments dedicated towards quantum materials and functional materials research respectively. It will support a diverse research portfolio ranging from magnetic nanodevices to battery materials and catalysts. We are now seeking a Beamline Scientist to take the lead on the development of our quantum materials imaging endstation which will support research including 3D imaging of topological magnetic spin textures, skyrmions and chiral systems, time-resolved magnetisation dynamics, antiferromagnetic and multiferroic materials and nanopatterned devices. Duties will include: Championing the detailed design, prototyping, construction, commissioning, and ongoing optimisation of the endstation. Close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to drive the development of both hardware and software, requiring excellent communication and organisational skills. Developing an internationally competitive research program, leading your own research and taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the beamline. Participation in in-house research programmes on the beamline. Participation in the maintenance, ongoing development, and upgrades of the beamline and endstations. Providing user support, as a local contact, by assisting visiting scientists in carrying out a wide range of experiments. Applicants will be considered for the Beamline Scientist or Senior Beamline Scientist level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience, and qualifications. About You You will hold an appropriate Science or Engineering Degree or equivalent as well as a PhD and proven relevant experience in a scientific field relevant to the post. You will demonstrate experience and knowledge in the following areas: Quantum or functional materials. Synchrotron measurements such as coherent imaging, ptychography, polarised soft x-ray scattering. Synchrotron-based x-ray techniques, ideally with experience of coherent imaging or polarised x-ray spectroscopy. Experimental skills, and the ability to conduct high quality original research. Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures. Python programming for data analysis, data acquisition and the control of scientific equipment. Applications with an active research program in imaging quantum materials or a related field are encouraged. The research program should ideally include experience with in-situ sample environments including the experimental setup, analysis, and interpretation of data. For consideration at the senior level, candidates are expected to have experience in developing and installing synchrotron instrumentation and demonstrate an internationally recognised research program with a vision for how their research would complement the capabilities of the CSXID beamline. Benefits Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable. To Apply Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role. Please state which position you wish to be considered for, or both.
